The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has responded to a devastating fire that swept through sections of the Timber Market in Gombe Metropolis, Gombe State.
NEMA announced the incident via its official X platform on Tuesday, revealing that the fire broke out on Monday, December 15, 2025, around 8:00 p.m.
Initial investigations suggest an electrical spark ignited the blaze. While no fatalities or injuries were reported, the fire destroyed goods and property valued at millions of naira.
The precise number of affected traders remains unclear as NEMA continues conducting a thorough damage and needs assessment.
NEMA coordinated emergency operations alongside the Federal Fire Service, Gombe State Fire Service, and Gombe State University Fire Unit. The swift, collaborative response successfully contained the flames and prevented them from spreading to neighboring market areas.
Additional support came from multiple agencies at the scene, including the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Red Cross Society, the Nigerian Army, NEMA Grassroots Emergency Volunteers, and media representatives.
NEMA praised the effective inter-agency coordination, noting it proved crucial in limiting the extent of damage.
The agency has urged traders and the public to observe strict fire safety protocols, particularly regarding electrical installations, to prevent future occurrences.
NEMA indicated that updates will follow as the assessment progresses.
