A devastating midnight fire has consumed a one-storey commercial building on Somoye Street in Ikeja’s Computer Village, destroying property valued at several million naira.
The blaze, which erupted around midnight on Tuesday, engulfed the building that housed multiple dealers in computers and computer accessories. While no fatalities were reported, one Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service official suffered minor injuries during the operation and received immediate first aid from Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) personnel.
Emergency teams from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) responded swiftly to distress calls, successfully containing the flames and preventing them from spreading to nearby structures.
The building’s upper floor was completely gutted by the fire, with the high concentration of combustible materials accelerating the blaze’s spread throughout the storage facility.
Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, confirmed that all goods and merchandise stored in the building were completely destroyed by the conflagration. He noted that structural assessments revealed partial compromise of the building, necessitating immediate professional evaluation.
“Upon arrival, the LASEMA Response Team conducted a risk assessment and cordoned off the affected area. Safety and precautionary measures were activated to prevent damage to adjoining buildings and the immediate environment,” Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu explained.
He emphasized that the rapid response by emergency personnel prevented the fire from escalating to neighboring structures.
At the time of reporting, the cause of the fire remained under investigation, with relevant emergency and regulatory agencies working to determine what sparked the incident and implement preventive measures.
Firefighting operations have been completed, though damping-down activities continued to eliminate residual heat and prevent re-ignition.
Traders, sympathizers, and local residents gathered at the scene, with affected shop owners surveying the extensive damage to their businesses.
