Barely a month after receiving a presidential pardon and returning to Nigeria from exile, Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has been accused of disrupting activities of several real estate companies in Ibadan, sparking concern within the city’s business community.
According to reports, Igboho was recently seen at some construction sites in Ibadan accompanied by a convoy of vehicles and supporters. Witnesses alleged that operations at affected sites were temporarily halted, with workers reportedly fleeing over fears of confrontation. One of the incidents was said to have occurred on Monday at the premises of a prominent property development company, where activities were disrupted amid heated exchanges.
A major point of controversy stems from claims attributed to Igboho that he is acting with the backing of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja. Some witnesses alleged that he referenced the monarch during the confrontation, a development that has stirred debate within Ibadan’s traditional and business circles. There has, however, been no official statement from the palace confirming any such endorsement.
The situation is particularly striking given that only weeks earlier, Igboho had publicly expressed appreciation to prominent traditional rulers, including the Olubadan, for their roles in efforts surrounding his freedom and return to Nigeria. His recent actions have therefore drawn mixed reactions, with some supporters defending him while critics question the implications for investor confidence in the state.
The affected real estate firm has reportedly engaged the services of Afe Babalola & Co. to seek legal redress. Petitions are also said to have been forwarded to the Inspector-General of Police, the Oyo State Government, the National Assembly, and the Presidency, alleging threats and calling for intervention to prevent further disruptions.
Legal analysts note that the unfolding dispute could test the boundaries between activism and private enterprise, especially in a sector that plays a significant role in job creation and urban development in Oyo State.
As tensions simmer, community leaders have urged caution and called for clarification from relevant authorities to prevent further escalation. For now, stakeholders in Ibadan’s real estate sector say they are closely monitoring the situation, hoping that lawful processes will resolve the matter and restore confidence in the business environment.
