Former Ogun State Governor and Senator representing Ogun East, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Pa Reuben Fasoranti, the late national leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere.
Daniel described the death of the elder statesman, who reportedly passed away at the age of 100, as a monumental loss to Yorubaland and Nigeria, saying the Yoruba nation had lost a respected leader who represented integrity, wisdom and moral leadership.
The senator said Fasoranti was more than a political leader to him, describing the late centenarian as a father figure whose life was guided by honesty, courage, patriotism and an unwavering commitment to progressive ideals.
Reflecting on their longstanding relationship, Daniel recalled visiting Fasoranti in 2019 to commiserate with him following the tragic murder of his daughter, Funke Olakunrin.
According to the former governor, he was deeply touched by the elder statesman’s strength and resilience during the difficult period. Despite the painful loss, Fasoranti remained committed to providing leadership and guidance for the Yoruba people.
Daniel noted that the late Afenifere leader demonstrated remarkable courage by continuing to serve his people despite the personal tragedy, adding that his dedication to the unity and development of Nigeria remained strong throughout his life.
The senator also highlighted Fasoranti’s commitment to the Yoruba Omoluabi values, which emphasise integrity, good character, wisdom, responsibility and selfless service to society.
He recalled speaking at Fasoranti’s 99th birthday lecture in Akure, Ondo State, where he praised the elder statesman’s life as an example of the true Omoluabi ideal.
Daniel explained that Fasoranti’s greatness was not measured by his long life alone but also by his contributions to society, his commitment to ethical leadership and his efforts to preserve the cultural and moral values of the Yoruba people.
The former governor further described the death as the end of an important era within the political tradition associated with the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
He said Fasoranti’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development and the campaign for true federalism would remain part of the country’s political history.
According to Daniel, the late Afenifere leader remained committed to democracy, national development and a fairer federal structure until his final days.
He urged members of Fasoranti’s family, the people of Ondo State and members of Afenifere to take comfort in the enduring legacy of honour, patriotism and selfless service left behind by the elder statesman.
Daniel also expressed hope that younger generations would draw inspiration from Fasoranti’s life, particularly his commitment to public service, principled leadership and the welfare of the people.
He prayed for God’s comfort for the family and all those mourning the deceased, asking that the late elder statesman be granted eternal rest.
The senator added that the ideals of unity, integrity, ethical leadership and national development championed by Fasoranti should continue to guide Yorubaland and Nigeria, even after his passing.
