The House of Representatives has been thrown into mourning following the death of Hon. Yaya Bauchi Tongo, the lawmaker representing Kwami/Funakaye/Gombe Federal Constituency of Gombe State.
Tongo reportedly passed away on Friday at Nizamiye Hospital in Abuja, where he had been receiving medical treatment.
The late legislator was elected into the House of Representatives on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2023 general elections before later joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in March 2026.
Former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, confirmed the lawmaker’s death in a post shared on his verified X account on Friday.
According to Pantami, he had visited Tongo earlier in the day alongside some associates to pray for him at the Abuja-based hospital.
He disclosed that during the visit, he met members of the lawmaker’s family, including two of his children and other relatives, who accompanied him to Tongo’s hospital room.
Pantami said he left the hospital deeply concerned about the lawmaker’s health condition, describing it as critical despite hopes for divine intervention.
A few hours after the visit, he received news that the federal lawmaker had died.
Expressing his grief, Pantami described Tongo’s passing as a painful loss to Gombe State and prayed for Allah to grant him eternal rest while giving his family the strength to bear the loss.
The former minister also referenced an Islamic tradition regarding the spiritual significance of dying on a Friday.
As of the time of filing this report, the leadership of the House of Representatives had not issued an official statement on the lawmaker’s death.
Tongo was among the members of Nigeria’s 10th National Assembly elected in 2023 and represented the Kwami/Funakaye/Gombe Federal Constituency until his passing.
