A 36-year-old Nigerian man, Babatunde Odutola, has been sentenced to 44 weeks in prison in the United Kingdom after exposing himself and engaging in a sexual act in front of a woman on a train travelling through Cheshire towards Manchester.
Odutola, who has no fixed address, was sentenced at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Monday, September 14, 2026, just three days after the incident.
According to the British Transport Police (BTP), Odutola pleaded guilty to one count of outraging public decency and breaching a suspended sentence order.
The incident occurred around 7pm on Friday, September 11, while Odutola was travelling on a train heading towards Manchester Piccadilly.
The court heard that Odutola approached a woman who was travelling alone and stared at her in an intimidating manner. He reportedly became aggressive after she refused to engage with him.
He later exposed himself while seated in a wheelchair and engaged in a sexual act while looking towards the woman and asking her to come over.
Another passenger intervened and helped the distressed woman leave the carriage.
CCTV footage reportedly captured Odutola continuing the act as other passengers moved through the carriage.
Police were alerted, and BTP officers arrested him after the train arrived at Manchester Piccadilly station.
Detective Constable Leonidas Christoforou of the British Transport Police said the incident would have been frightening for the woman, who had been travelling alone.
He said Odutola initially denied the allegations during a police interview and showed little remorse. However, CCTV footage and witness accounts provided evidence against him, leading to his guilty plea in court.
Christoforou also said the incident was not an isolated case, noting that Odutola was already a registered sex offender.
He said such behaviour would not be tolerated on the UK’s railway network and that police would continue to pursue offenders involved in sexual crimes on trains.
The officer urged passengers who experience or witness sexual offences on the railway to report them to the British Transport Police by texting 61016.
The BTP said Odutola was convicted and jailed within 72 hours of the incident.
