Zamfara State has a new technology institute, after Governor Dr. Dauda Lawal put pen to paper on the bill establishing the Zamfara Institute of Information Technology, Gusau (ZIIT), signing it into law at his office in the state capital.
The signing formally creates the legal and operational framework for an institution the government describes as a “breeding ground” for the next generation of technology professionals.
Dr. Habib Gajam, Executive Secretary of the Zamfara Information Technology Development Agency (ZITDA), said the establishment of ZIIT signals a strategic shift toward a knowledge-driven economy. The institute is expected to equip young people with cutting-edge digital skills, positioning Zamfara as an emerging technology and innovation hub in Northern Nigeria.
Gajam noted that the institute will focus on building expertise in high-demand fields including software development, cybersecurity, data science, and artificial intelligence.
Though headquartered in Gusau, the state capital, ZIIT’s mandate is designed to reach beyond Zamfara’s borders, catering to the broader Northwest region and Northern Nigeria as a whole.
Government officials and stakeholders at the ceremony praised Governor Lawal for the move, calling it a “bold statement of intent” to harness technology for economic growth and inclusive development.
Youth groups and tech enthusiasts across the state have welcomed the development, viewing it as a significant step toward curbing unemployment and nurturing a culture of innovation in the region.
