Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has flagged off the distribution of 72,000 bags of fertiliser, 200,000 litres of herbicides and other agricultural inputs to farmers across the state in a bid to increase food production during the 2026 wet farming season.
The distribution exercise was launched on Friday at the Trade Fair Complex in Gusau under the Zamfara 2026 Wet-Season Fertiliser Programme.
According to a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, the state government procured more than 120 truckloads of fertilisers and other farming inputs for beneficiaries across Zamfara.
In addition to fertilisers and herbicides, the government distributed 100 crop residue crushers, 100 grass choppers, feed milling machines, improved pasture seeds, 20 motorcycles and 20 mobile phones to agricultural extension workers.
Speaking during the launch, Governor Lawal described agriculture as the backbone of Zamfara’s economy, noting that the state possesses vast fertile land and a strong farming population capable of driving economic growth.
He said the intervention was designed to revive the agricultural sector, strengthen food security, improve livelihoods and position Zamfara as a major contributor to Nigeria’s agricultural economy.
The governor stressed that farming remains a critical source of income for residents and plays a key role in reducing poverty, insecurity and other social challenges.
Lawal added that his administration is committed to transforming agriculture from subsistence farming into a modern, technology-driven and market-oriented sector through improved access to quality inputs, mechanisation, irrigation, extension services, climate-smart farming practices and better market opportunities.
He also disclosed that the state government has deepened collaboration with the Federal Government, development partners and international organisations to expand agricultural support programmes.
According to him, initiatives such as FADAMA III, NG-CARES, SPIN, ZACADEP, SAPZ and IFAD-supported programmes have already helped thousands of farmers gain access to improved seeds, fertilisers, agrochemicals, irrigation facilities and modern farming methods.
Governor Lawal said the programmes are expected to boost agricultural productivity, raise household incomes and encourage greater youth participation in farming.
Under the distribution plan, all 147 political wards across Zamfara’s 14 local government areas will benefit. Each ward will receive 340 bags of fertiliser, while every local government area has been allocated 8,000 litres of herbicides.
