The Elegant Nurses Forum has spoken out against what it calls ongoing threats, harassment, and human rights abuses targeting Nurse Rufus Mojisola, a whistleblower in Kwara State.
According to a Friday statement signed by Nurse Thomas Abiodun Olamide on behalf of the forum, Mojisola is facing retaliation for upholding professional standards, patient safety, and transparency.
The group claims the nurse was unlawfully transferred to a high-risk location affected by terrorist activity, putting her safety in jeopardy. She was subsequently attacked by individuals believed to be sponsored by local government officials, the statement alleges. Mojisola later resigned under pressure after her father reportedly received threats, according to the forum.
The Elegant Nurses Forum characterized these incidents as serious breaches of her fundamental rights and professional standing.
The organization also questioned the response of the Kwara State Chairman of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), suggesting his failure to act on credible threat reports points to possible complicity within state leadership.
The forum stated that the Kwara State Government appears to be indirectly supporting criminal behavior and creating an atmosphere of fear and suppression. Such actions, it warned, compromise healthcare quality by threatening the safety and independence of nursing professionals.
Among its demands, the forum is calling for Mojisola’s forced resignation to be nullified, full payment of her wages and benefits, enhanced security measures for healthcare whistleblowers, reversal of punitive staff transfers, and an independent probe into the attack and alleged government involvement.
The group is also seeking intervention from NANNM’s National Secretariat, institutional reforms to safeguard health sector whistleblowers, and public commitment from state authorities against further retaliation.
If these conditions are not met within 72 hours, the forum plans to bring the case before international organizations including the International Council of Nurses, the United Nations, the U.S. Embassy, and various human rights groups.
The statement concluded with a message of support: “We stand firmly with Nurse Rufus Mojisola and all nurses who face persecution for defending truth. An attack on one nurse is an attack on all. We will continue fighting against intimidation while demanding justice, accountability, and protection for healthcare workers and the communities they serve.”
