Obafemi Awolowo University in Osun State has confirmed the death of Timilehin Toromade, an 18-year-old third-year medical student who was discovered deceased in his hostel room on Tuesday morning.

According to university officials, Toromade (matriculation number CLI/2022/133) is believed to have died in his sleep during the early hours of January 6, 2026. The university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju, revealed that a roommate had unlocked the door for another medical student around 2 a.m., indicating that the death likely occurred sometime after that hour.

“The Management of Obafemi Awolowo University has received with profound shock and deep sorrow the devastating news of the sudden passing of this Part Three student from the College of Health Sciences, Department of Medicine and Surgery,” the institution stated.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Simeon Bamire expressed condolences to Toromade’s family, classmates, and the wider university community, calling the loss “deeply painful and distressing.”

“The entire University community is united in grief over the untimely departure of a student who had embraced the rigours of medical training with the hope of, one day, healing others and serving humanity,” Bamire said, noting that the young man’s death has created a void among his peers.

University management confirmed it is collaborating with relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and has initiated support measures for students and staff affected by the tragedy.

The institution has urged members of the university community—including students, staff, alumni, and supporters—to remain calm and prayerful during this difficult period while upholding values of compassion and solidarity.
