In response to the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday, the House of Representatives has officially passed and adopted the proclamation through a voice vote, with 243 members in attendance.
On Thursday, the House further made recommendations to support the President’s proclamation, calling for the establishment of a national committee to restore peace in Rivers State.
Additionally, the House recommended that the National Assembly take over the activities of the Rivers State House of Assembly for six months, following the President’s suspension of the lawmakers.
Apples Bite Magazine reports that in his nationwide broadcast, Tinubu not only declared an emergency rule in Rivers State but also suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all State Assembly members—though these actions required confirmation from the National Assembly.
Citing the prolonged political crisis in the state as the reason for his decision, the President appointed Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Rtd) as the Administrator to immediately take charge of the state’s affairs.
