The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has criticized the removal of Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN) and Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor from Nnamdi Kanu’s legal team. HURIWA described it as a significant error given the lawyers’ successful defense of Kanu.
According to a Press Statement, HURIWA highlighted the recent failure of Kanu’s new legal team to secure bail due to his health issues, signaling a setback. The prominent civil rights advocacy group praised Ozekhome and Ejiofor for their legal expertise and commitment to justice, noting their achievements in Kanu’s case. “Despite facing personal risks, including alleged assassination attempts, Ejiofor remained steadfast”.
HURIWA emphasized the importance of recognizing the contributions of Ozekhome and Ejiofor and urged Kanu’s new legal team to focus on securing his release without vilifying the previous lawyers. They called for a reevaluation of Kanu’s legal strategy, emphasizing unity among stakeholders.
