The Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, has appointed Chief Emmanuel Iyase as the new Okao Eguae (District Head from the Benin palace) for the Ologbo and Ehor Dukedoms, which are located in the Ikpoba-Okha and Uhunmwode Local Government Areas of Edo State.
Chief Iyase, who becomes the first Okao Eguae from the Benin Palace, will be responsible for strengthening the traditional leadership structures in these areas.
His role includes overseeing the Dukedoms where the suspended Enigie (Dukes) of Ologbo, Prince Owen Jackson Akenzua, and Ehor, Chief D. E. Igiehon, had been removed due to their alleged rebellion against the Benin monarchy, alongside 69 other suspended Dukes.
During the Ekpomwen-abor — a ceremony of appreciation following the conferment of a chieftaincy title at the Ugha Ozolua axis of the Oba Palace in Benin City — Oba Ewuare II gave a brief address, advising the newly appointed Okao to avoid unethical practices that could undermine the authority of the Oba or bring disrepute to the Dukedoms.
He said, “I will also urge the newly appointed Okao to shun acts that are unethical practices that could either undermine the Oba’s authority or bring disrepute to the Dukedoms.”
The Oba further urged Chief Iyase to work in harmony with the Edionwere (elders) of the Dukedoms, as well as with the support of key functionaries in the Benin monarchy’s authority.
In response, Chief Iyase, who was accompanied by his family and well-wishers, expressed gratitude to Oba Ewuare II and promised to uphold good conduct for the well-being of the people and the overall development of the Ologbo and Ehor Dukedoms.
He vowed to honour the responsibilities bestowed upon him, ensuring a positive and productive tenure.
