Sheikh Bashir Solihu, the Chief Imam of Ilorin and Chairman of the Kwara Council of Ulama, has passed away at age 75 following an illness.
Sheikh Abdullahi Nurudeen-Adana, Chairman of the Islamic Missionaries Association (IMAN), confirmed the religious leader’s death to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday at the Palace of the Emir of Ilorin.
Sheikh Solihu, who served as the 12th Chief Imam of the Ilorin Emirate, held the position for more than 40 years after his appointment in 1983. He built his reputation through years of Islamic scholarship and became one of Kwara’s most prominent religious figures.
“Throughout his long tenure, the late Chief Imam was widely known for his deep understanding of Islamic teachings, firm leadership in religious affairs, and consistent advocacy for peace, unity, and religious tolerance among Muslims and the wider society,” Nurudeen-Adana said.
The IMAN chairman characterized the Chief Imam’s death as shocking and a significant loss. He extended condolences to the Emir of Ilorin, members of the Kwara Council of Ulama, and the people of the Ilorin Emirate.
