Nigeria’s electoral body has dismissed reports claiming it has published the schedule for the country’s next general elections, calling such claims false and urging citizens to rely only on official channels for information.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) issued a statement Thursday refuting widespread reports that it had released the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections.
“This information is false and misleading. INEC has not released any timetable or schedule of activities for the 2027 General Elections,” the commission stated emphatically.
The electoral body reminded Nigerians that it operates within strict legal boundaries. According to Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, INEC is required to publish election notices no later than 360 days before the scheduled date of a general election. Any timetable circulating outside this legal framework cannot be authentic, the commission emphasized.
INEC assured the public that when the official timetable is ready, it will be released through proper legal channels and in full compliance with both the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) and the Electoral Act 2022.
The commission called on citizens and media organizations to disregard false reports and verify information through INEC’s official platforms before sharing or publishing election-related news.
The statement was signed by Adedayo Oketola, Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman.
