Iyabo Obasanjo has officially suspended her bid for the Ogun State governorship, marking a significant shift in the political landscape ahead of the next election cycle.
In a statement released to the public, the former presidential adviser and daughter of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo announced that her decision was reached after extensive consultations with political associates, party stakeholders, and supporters across the state.
Obasanjo explained that stepping down from the race was in the best interest of party unity and the broader goal of ensuring a cohesive strategy ahead of the polls. She emphasized the importance of avoiding internal divisions that could weaken the party’s chances at the ballot.
“I believe this is the right time to put collective interest above personal ambition,” she said, noting that her withdrawal should not be seen as a retreat from public service, but rather a strategic move to strengthen political alignment within Ogun State.
In the same statement, she extended her congratulations to Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Senator Yayi, acknowledging his emergence as a leading contender in the race. She praised his political experience and described him as a capable figure with the potential to lead Ogun State effectively.
Obasanjo also called on her supporters to rally behind Senator Adeola, urging them to remain committed to the shared vision of progress, development, and good governance in the state.
Political observers say the development could reshape alliances within Ogun State, as her exit from the race is expected to consolidate support around Senator Adeola and reduce internal competition within the party.
Despite suspending her governorship ambition, Obasanjo reaffirmed her dedication to contributing to the growth and development of Ogun State, pledging to continue engaging in initiatives that promote social welfare, economic advancement, and inclusive governance.
