The Department of State Services (DSS) has released Joe Ajaero, the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), who was taken into custody earlier this week.
Ajaero was reportedly released on bail around 11:10 p.m. He had been arrested on Monday, September 10, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja while en route to the United Kingdom for a global Trade Union Congress meeting.
In response to his arrest, the NLC had issued a midnight deadline demanding Ajaero’s release and placed its affiliates on high alert.
“The Congress will not stand idly by while the rights of its leaders and members are trampled upon. Accordingly, we demand the immediate and unconditional release of Comrade Ajaero,” NLC spokesman Benson Upah stated in a press release.
