Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is scheduled to formally join the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday, January 26, 2026, following his resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) last Friday.
The governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, confirmed the move in a statement released Sunday, marking the end of months of political negotiations.
Governor Yusuf previously served as an APC member in 2014, when he secured the party’s nomination for the Kano Central Senatorial seat before stepping aside for his political mentor, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso.
In his statement, the governor cited the need for improved governance, national unity, and development as driving factors behind his decision to return to the ruling party. He characterized the APC as an established platform that would enable more effective progressive leadership.
Yusuf emphasized that rejoining the APC would strengthen collaboration with the federal government, accelerating infrastructure projects, improving security coordination, and enhancing public services throughout Kano State. He also expressed confidence that the transition would promote political stability and unity within the state.
The governor’s defection includes 22 state assembly members, eight federal legislators, and all 44 local government chairmen in Kano State.
As part of his integration into the APC, Governor Yusuf is expected to inaugurate the party’s electronic registration exercise in Kano State.
