The King Kosoko Royal Family made history on Tuesday as it officially declared Prince Abdulrafiu Babajide Akanni Kosoko as Oloja of Lagos-elect, in a ceremony that underscored Lagos’s enduring royal traditions.
Hundreds of royal family members gathered at the King Kosoko Palace in Ereko, Lagos Island, to witness the declaration. The palace courtyard came alive with traditional rites and prayers as the family confirmed its selection.
Alhaja Mutiat Ashabi Ali-Balogun, Olori Ebi General of the King Kosoko Royal Family, presented Prince Kosoko to the gathering, raising his hands in the customary gesture of affirmation. She was supported by Deputy Olori Ebi General Alhaja Oyindamola Ayepola, who also heads the Meshimo Ruling House.
Prince Kosoko now awaits his traditional installation and capping by Oba Rilwanu Osuolale Okikiola Aremu Akiolu, the Oba of Lagos, in accordance with established palace protocols.
A Historic Office
The Oloja of Lagos title represents one of the most distinguished traditional positions in the city’s history. The office symbolizes leadership, cultural preservation, and the maintenance of indigenous customs, particularly within royal families linked to Lagos’s founding.
Predating colonial rule, the position has served for centuries as a symbol of continuity and resilience in Lagos’s traditional institutions. Within the King Kosoko lineage, the title carries special significance, connecting back to King Kosoko, among the most influential monarchs in Lagos history.

Prince Kosoko, better known as Jide Kosoko, brings both royal lineage and professional distinction to the role. A veteran of Nigeria’s film industry, he stands among Nollywood’s most accomplished actors, producers, and directors.
With a career spanning decades, Prince Kosoko has appeared in hundreds of films across Yoruba and English productions. His contributions as producer and director have helped shape Nollywood’s growth and international recognition, earning him respect throughout the creative industry and among audiences across Nigeria and beyond.
Observers at the ceremony remarked that his selection represents a merging of heritage and modernity—royalty grounded in history while engaged with contemporary culture.
