The Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning against individuals assuming chieftaincy titles without proper authorization, threatening violators with arrest and prosecution.
Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, Mr. Bolaji Robert, announced on Tuesday that offenders would be prosecuted under the state’s Obas and Chiefs Law of 2015.
Robert condemned the growing trend of self-proclaimed traditional rulers, describing it as disruptive and capable of fueling tension and social discord across communities.
He emphasized that unauthorized use of royal titles—including “Oba,” “His Royal Majesty,” or “His Royal Highness”—constitutes a legal violation.
“The proliferation of these self-styled chieftaincy titles has escalated to a concerning degree, undermining our regulatory efforts,” Robert stated.
He referenced sections 15 through 20 of the 2015 law, which establish clear protocols for conferring legitimate chieftaincy titles in the state.
The commissioner clarified that his ministry holds exclusive authority to approve all chieftaincy titles in Lagos.
Additionally, sections 21 and 23 of the law prohibit the unauthorized use of royal regalia, including beaded crowns, ceremonial footwear, staffs, and horse whisks, by individuals lacking government recognition.
Robert announced that enforcement measures would be intensified, with violators facing prosecution and potential imprisonment of up to two years.
“Any chieftaincy title granted without the governor’s approval is legally invalid,” he warned. “Such violations undermine the dignity of our traditional institutions.”
The commissioner urged individuals currently holding unauthorized titles to cease their claims immediately or face legal consequences.
He also encouraged residents to report cases of illegal title conferment to the ministry or law enforcement agencies.
Robert stressed that these enforcement actions are essential to preserving the integrity and cultural heritage of Lagos State’s traditional institutions.
