The Lagos State Government has met with waste managers and representatives of Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators ahead of the state’s monthly environmental sanitation exercise scheduled for Saturday, August 29.
The meeting, led by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, focused on addressing challenges affecting waste collection and disposal across the state.
Wahab said the government was working towards establishing a waste management system that is efficient, sustainable and accountable.
Among the issues discussed were the regulation of PSP operators, access to dumpsites, roads leading to disposal facilities, drainage, operational platforms and waste disposal turnaround time.
The commissioner said ongoing improvement works at Solous 3 in Igando would help reduce pressure on other disposal sites and improve waste collection, particularly in communities across the Alimosho axis.
The government is also reviewing the financial sustainability of PSP operations. However, Wahab stressed that any adjustment must be accompanied by transparency, accountability and improved service delivery.
He warned that operational difficulties would not be accepted as an excuse for poor service.
“Operational challenges cannot be an excuse for failing residents,” Wahab said.
He added that every PSP operator must fulfil its contractual obligations, maintain its vehicles and ensure consistent waste collection services.
The state government also announced plans for stronger community-level monitoring and enforcement to encourage residents to patronise approved waste operators and discourage indiscriminate dumping.
Wahab urged residents, waste managers and the government to work together towards maintaining a cleaner and healthier Lagos.
The monthly environmental sanitation exercise is held across the state on the last Saturday of every month.
Residents have been advised to participate by cleaning their surroundings and ensuring that waste is disposed of through approved channels.
