Lagos State has announced the commencement date for new laws.
The state government recently revealed that 5 of the laws will become operational from February 19, 2025, while two others will take effect from August 4, 2025.
The laws effective from February 19, 2025, include the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service Law, which guarantees a robust legal framework for improving fire safety, emergency response, and rescue services in the state, while the Lagos State Law Enforcement Training Institute Law is meant to enhance law enforcement standards.
Consumer Protection Agency Law: This guarantees a dedicated agency to tackle complaints, enforce the rights of consumers, and foster fair trade practices across goods and service sectors.
Victim Assistance and Witness Protection Law: It protects witnesses and provides support to victims of crime, to aid cooperation with law enforcement and decrease fear of reprisal.
Laws that will be effective from August 4, 2025, include the Local Government Administration Law, 2025. This legislation will focus on reforming local government operations across Lagos State, breaking down administrative roles and aiding accountability, transparency and efficiency.
Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy Law, 2025: Named after the late ex-Governor of Lagos State, the law establishes a leadership development programme for young Lagosians to develop future leaders for the public sector.
The Ministry of Justice urged every stakeholder, including government ministries, departments, and agencies, as well as Nigerians, to be aware of the commencement dates and be prepared for the total implementation and compliance.
“The assigned commencement dates are part of the state’s deliberate and coordinated effort to ensure the effective rollout of the laws and public awareness.
The Lagos State reaffirms its commitment to institutional reforms, human rights protection, and improved governance. The laws are expected to significantly impact sectors including emergency management, consumer rights, justice delivery, organ transplant regulation, and grassroots administration,” a press release read.
