The Lagos State Government has announced a traffic diversion plan in preparation for the commencement of Phase I reconstruction and expansion works on Ogunnusi Road in Ikeja Local Government Area, beginning March 6, 2026.
The announcement was contained in a statement signed electronically by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi. He advised motorists using the Ojodu-Berger to Ijaye/Agege corridor to plan their journeys in advance, as parts of the road will be temporarily closed during the construction period.
According to Osiyemi, the project is part of a broader upgrade of the 9-kilometre dual carriageway stretching from Ojodu-Berger Bus Stop to Mobil Filling Station Junction, covering both inbound and outbound lanes.
Phase I of the project will focus on a 4.5-kilometre stretch from Ojodu-Berger Bus Stop to Mobil Filling Station Junction, inward Ijaye/Agege, and is expected to be completed by February 6, 2027. The entire project, spanning Phases I and II, is scheduled to run from March 6, 2026, through January 6, 2028.
Traffic Arrangements
To ensure smooth execution of the works, vehicular access will be restricted within the construction zone.
Motorists heading toward Ijaye/Agege via Ogunnusi Road from Ojodu-Berger will be diverted to a contraflow on the Ojodu-Berger-bound carriageway for about one kilometre before reconnecting to the main road.
Alternatively, drivers may use Dr. Nurudeen Olowopopo Way to connect to Otunba Jobifele Way, then proceed to Obafemi Awolowo Way and link Lateef Jakande Road to reach their destinations.
Articulated vehicle and truck drivers coming from the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway toward Agege have been advised to reroute through Ojota/Maryland, connect to Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, proceed to Kodesoh Street, link Oba Akran Avenue to Guinness Roundabout, and continue via Ogba Road toward Pen Cinema.
Motorists travelling from Ijaye/Agege toward Ojodu-Berger will maintain through traffic but will also merge into a one-kilometre contraflow near the work zone before regaining full access after the construction stretch.
Osiyemi urged road users to remain patient, obey traffic signs, and cooperate with traffic management personnel deployed along the corridor.
Infrastructure Upgrade Efforts
The reconstruction of Ogunnusi Road forms part of ongoing efforts by the Lagos State Government to enhance road infrastructure and reduce congestion in Ikeja and surrounding areas.
Earlier in January 2026, the state introduced a night-time traffic diversion at Fadeyi inward Donmanlong and Donmanlong inward Ojuelegba to enable the installation of truck barriers aimed at preventing accidents and saving lives.
The government is also carrying out a major rehabilitation project along the Lekki-Ajah corridor, scheduled to run from November 15, 2025, to July 15, 2026. The project is being executed in phases, with partial lane closures and alternative routes introduced to minimise disruption to commuters.
