U.S. Coast Guard Team Lands in Lagos for Key Port Security Assessment

A delegation from the United States Coast Guard has arrived in Lagos to commence a critical security audit of Nigeria’s port facilities, in a move aimed at strengthening maritime safety and safeguarding international trade routes.

The assessment, which focuses on compliance with global maritime security standards, will evaluate security procedures at major port installations in Lagos, including cargo handling systems, access control mechanisms, and vessel monitoring operations. The visit forms part of routine international port security verification exercises conducted under the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code.

Officials say the audit is particularly significant for Nigeria, as the outcome could influence the status of Nigerian ports in global shipping networks, especially in trade relations involving the United States. A favorable report would reaffirm confidence in the country’s port security architecture, while any identified gaps could prompt recommendations for corrective measures.

The U.S. delegation is expected to engage with the Nigerian Ports Authority, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, and other security stakeholders to review existing protocols and assess recent improvements in surveillance, intelligence-sharing, and emergency response systems.

Industry stakeholders note that maintaining strong port security standards is essential for Nigeria, given Lagos’ role as a major maritime hub in West Africa. The state hosts some of the country’s busiest seaports, including Apapa and Tin Can Island, which handle a significant percentage of Nigeria’s imports and exports.

Authorities have expressed optimism that the audit will further deepen maritime cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, enhance investor confidence, and reinforce efforts to combat piracy, smuggling, and other transnational maritime crimes in the Gulf of Guinea.
