The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has assured residents that the current waste collection challenges experienced across Lagos State will be significantly resolved within the next six to eight months as the government expands waste management infrastructure.
Speaking during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Badagry on Saturday, LAWMA Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the agency was implementing measures to improve waste collection and disposal across the state.
Gbadegesin dismissed reports suggesting that local government councils were taking over LAWMA’s responsibilities through independent waste collection initiatives, describing such claims as inaccurate.
According to him, local governments remain key partners in the state’s waste management system and are supporting LAWMA’s operations by acquiring two compactor trucks each, while the Lagos State Government is also purchasing additional trucks to strengthen service delivery.
He explained that the growing population of Lagos and the corresponding increase in waste generation had contributed to collection delays, adding that the government was investing in new disposal and recycling facilities to address the situation.
The LAWMA boss disclosed that work was ongoing at the Olusosun facility, while transfer loading stations and material recovery facilities were being developed across the state. He also revealed that Badagry would host a major material recovery facility aimed at recycling waste and generating value from recoverable materials.
Gbadegesin emphasized that the proposed facility would not function as a dumpsite but as a modern recycling center where waste would be processed safely and reusable materials recovered for economic benefits.
He attributed recent operational setbacks to flooding around the Olusosun dumpsite, noting that heavy rainfall had affected access roads used by refuse trucks.
According to him, the situation would improve once an alternative section of the facility is reopened for waste disposal.
Gbadegesin stated that only about 30 to 40 percent of Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators had been affected by the disruptions, while many others continued operations through satellite disposal sites located in Epe, Ikorodu and Badagry.
He expressed optimism that residents would begin to notice improvements in waste collection before the end of the week.
The LAWMA chief also appealed to residents to properly bag and store their waste, avoid dumping refuse on roadsides during temporary collection delays, and ensure prompt payment to PSP operators to support efficient service delivery.
He further encouraged residents to report waste collection lapses through LAWMA’s customer service channels for immediate attention, stressing that effective waste management requires the cooperation of both government and the public.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State APC deputy governorship candidate, Princess Damilola James, urged residents to embrace regular environmental sanitation to keep their communities clean and reduce the risk of flooding during the rainy season.
Speaking during a community sanitation exercise in Vetho Ajara, Badagry, James said proper disposal of waste and regular clearing of drains were essential for maintaining a healthy environment.
She called on residents to support the Lagos State Government’s sanitation enforcement efforts and sustain cleanliness beyond the monthly environmental sanitation exercise.
James added that community sanitation initiatives promote unity, shared responsibility and stronger neighborhood relationships while commending environmental authorities for their commitment to keeping Lagos clean.
She expressed confidence that the state’s environmental cleanliness campaign would continue to receive government support in the years ahead.
