Nigeria’s Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu has promised citizens that delivering dependable and sustainable electricity will be the government’s top priority this year.
In a New Year statement released Friday through his media adviser Bolaji Tunji, Adelabu outlined plans to transform the nation’s power sector.
“Our focus remains unshakable: to deliver reliable, accessible and sustainable electricity to power our homes, industries and dreams,” the minister stated.
The government’s strategy centers on strengthening grid infrastructure and expanding transmission capacity. Adelabu said his ministry will work more closely with electricity distribution companies to improve service quality and extend metering programs to communities nationwide.
The minister highlighted the Light Up Nigeria program as a key initiative, targeting industrial areas and farming communities to boost economic activity and create employment opportunities.
Renewable energy will receive increased attention, with solar and hydropower projects planned for underserved areas, according to Adelabu.
Reflecting on 2025, the minister acknowledged ongoing challenges but pointed to improvements in grid stability. He credited the Presidential Power Initiative—a partnership with Siemens—for reducing the frequent power grid failures that plagued previous years.
“As Phase One continues, we assure Nigerians of a strengthened grid that will make disturbances a thing of the past,” Adelabu said.
The minister called for collective effort from all levels of government, private sector partners, and ordinary citizens to support power sector reforms. He encouraged Nigerians to safeguard electricity infrastructure and embrace energy-saving habits.
Adelabu expressed gratitude to Oyo State residents for their continued support, promising tangible improvements in power supply throughout the year.
