The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has deployed an aerial surveillance aircraft to support ongoing search-and-rescue operations for pupils and teachers abducted from Yawota and Ahoro-Esinele communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
NAF spokesperson, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, confirmed the deployment in a statement released on Sunday.
Governor Seyi Makinde disclosed the development during a courtesy visit by representatives of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, and the Air Officer Commanding Logistics Command, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Suleh.
According to Makinde, the Air Force acted swiftly after the abduction by deploying surveillance operations to provide intelligence for security agencies involved in the rescue mission.
He explained that the intelligence gathered from the aerial missions has been instrumental in tracking movements and coordinating efforts to secure the victims’ release.
Makinde also urged residents of the affected communities and the wider state to remain calm and support security agencies as operations continue, assuring that all necessary resources are being mobilised to ensure the safe return of the abducted victims.
The governor commended the Nigerian Air Force for its rapid response and continued cooperation, adding that Oyo State’s newly acquired aerial assets are still being assembled at the NAF base in Lagos.
He noted that the aircraft were procured after consultations with the Air Force to ensure proper maintenance support, engineering expertise, and pilot training, expressing confidence that they would enhance future security operations once fully deployed.
Speaking on behalf of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Suleh reaffirmed the Air Force’s commitment to supporting rescue efforts and working with other security agencies to address insecurity in the region.
He also praised the Oyo State Government for its collaboration and support for Air Force projects and infrastructure in the state.
The abduction occurred on May 15, 2026, when armed men attacked three schools in Oriire LGA, kidnapping 39 students and seven teachers, totalling 46 victims.
The incident has further heightened concerns over the safety of schools and rising attacks on educational institutions in parts of Nigeria.
