NNPC Launches Voluntary Exit Programme, Plans Workforce Renewal

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has commenced an early retirement initiative aimed at restructuring its workforce, improving efficiency, and creating opportunities for younger professionals within the organisation.

The programme, which comprises the Accelerated Exit Scheme (AES) and the Voluntary Exit Scheme (VES), has already attracted significant interest from eligible employees, with company officials revealing that more than 70 per cent of qualified staff have indicated a willingness to participate.

According to officials who spoke anonymously because they were not authorised to comment publicly, the exercise is entirely voluntary and does not involve any form of coercion.

The Accelerated Exit Scheme is targeted at employees expected to retire by 2026, while the Voluntary Exit Scheme covers workers due for retirement in 2027 and employees on the SS1 grade level who are expected to retire between 2028 and 2030.

NNPC explained that the initiative is part of a broader strategy to manage workforce transitions, strengthen organisational capacity, and ensure long-term sustainability.

Addressing staff in an earlier internal communication, Group Chief Executive Officer Bashir Ojulari said the programme forms part of an ongoing transformation agenda designed to align the company with its future objectives.

He noted that NNPC had embarked on a major organisational recalibration over the past year and that the workforce must evolve alongside the company’s transformation efforts.

Ojulari said the AES and VES were designed to facilitate a smooth transition for employees nearing retirement while creating room for organisational renewal and future growth.

Participation Remains Optional

A senior company official familiar with the process stressed that participation in the scheme is entirely at the discretion of employees.

The source explained that early retirement programmes are common in large organisations and are intended to provide workers with an opportunity to leave service ahead of schedule while enjoying enhanced retirement benefits.

According to the official, employees who choose not to participate will continue their careers without any repercussions.

Another company source described the initiative as beneficial to both staff and the organisation, noting that workers who opt for early retirement will receive improved exit packages rather than waiting until they reach the mandatory retirement age or complete their years of service.

The official added that the programme allows employees seeking new opportunities or personal pursuits to transition on favourable terms.

Strong Employee Interest

Company insiders disclosed that initial feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with more than 70 per cent of eligible employees already expressing interest in the voluntary retirement package.

They argued that the high level of participation demonstrates that many workers view the programme as an opportunity to pursue other interests while benefiting from attractive exit incentives.

Officials also dismissed suggestions that the scheme was designed to target specific employees, stressing that similar initiatives have been implemented in the past both within NNPC and in other organisations.

Creating Space for Younger Talent

NNPC officials said the retirement programme will help open up positions for younger employees and facilitate career progression across the organisation.

They pointed out that the company recruited more than 1,000 workers last year and that the ongoing transition would create additional opportunities for emerging talent and specialised hires where necessary.

According to the officials, the exercise is expected to refresh the workforce, improve succession planning, and support the company’s long-term competitiveness.

Since becoming a limited liability company under the Petroleum Industry Act, NNPC has embarked on extensive reforms aimed at boosting operational efficiency, attracting skilled professionals, and positioning itself to compete effectively within the global energy industry.
