The Organising Secretary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Lagos State Council, Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Ijaya, has died after sustaining gunshot wounds in an attack by suspected gunmen in Lagos.
Ajiboye was reportedly ambushed on Sunday night, July 12, while returning home after visiting his childhood neighbourhood in Fadeyi. The attackers intercepted his vehicle along the Ikorodu Road corridor and opened fire, leaving the car riddled with bullet holes.
Initial reports indicated that Ajiboye and other occupants of the vehicle survived the attack with injuries. However, subsequent reports confirmed that the NURTW official later died from the gunshot wounds he sustained.
The identities and motive of the attackers remain unknown, while security agencies are yet to announce any arrests or provide further details on the incident.
Reacting to the tragic development, Lagos State NURTW Chairman, Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego, described Ajiboye’s death as a painful loss to the union.
In a tribute, Sego said he was deeply saddened by the news, describing the deceased as a loyal, dependable and committed ally whose contributions to the union would not be forgotten.
He noted that Ajiboye was not only the Organising Secretary of the Lagos State Council but also a trusted friend whose unwavering support and dedication made him a key figure within the union and its political structure.
The union chairman extended his condolences to Ajiboye’s family, friends and members of the NURTW, praying for God to forgive his shortcomings, grant him eternal rest and give those he left behind the strength to bear the loss.
Ajiboye’s killing has sparked fresh concerns over violent attacks in Lagos, with many calling for a thorough investigation to identify and prosecute those responsible. Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
