The Lagos State House of Assembly impeached its Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, on Monday, January 13.
The decision was based on allegations of corruption, abuse of office, and intimidation. Obasa was reportedly in Atlanta, Georgia, attending a legal conference at the time of his impeachment.
According to property records sighted by Peoples Gazette, the former Speaker owns a suburban property in Lawrenceville, Georgia, purchased in May 2019 for $424,742.
The residence was upgraded from four to seven bedrooms and is now valued at $654,602.In 2024 alone, Obasa paid $40,000 in property taxes, far exceeding his official earnings as Speaker.
An anti-corruption advocate, Eric Okonkwo, who spoke on the value of the property said, “No public official in Nigeria earns enough to afford such luxury, especially not one who claims to be transparent.
”The Press Nigeria recall that the impeachment was carried out after 32 of the Assembly’s 40 members voted in favour of his removal.The motion was raised by Femi Saheed (Kosofe II) and seconded by Aro Moshood Abiodun (Ikorodu II).
Mojisola Lasbat Meranda (Apapa I) was elected as the new Speaker, making her the first woman to hold the position in Lagos State history.Obasa has consistently denied all misconduct allegations, insisting his wealth was legitimately earned.
However, critics have questioned his financial transparency.It remains unclear whether he will return to Nigeria to continue his legislative duties as a floor member.
