Political stakeholders in Ogun East Senatorial District have raised concerns over what they describe as subtle moves capable of weakening the federal influence of Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel, warning that such actions could undermine the district’s strategic advantage at the National Assembly.
The concerns come amid evolving political dynamics within Ogun State involving Governor Dapo Abiodun, with analysts cautioning that internal rivalries must not come at the expense of effective representation in Abuja
Daniel, who currently chairs the Senate Committee on Navy, is regarded as one of the most strategically positioned lawmakers in the 10th National Assembly. The committee plays a central role in overseeing Nigeria’s maritime security, naval operations, and defence-related expenditures areas critical to the country’s economic stability.
Stakeholders argue that his position places Ogun East within a powerful decision-making loop at the federal level, offering indirect access to policy influence, security intelligence discussions, and development opportunities tied to maritime infrastructure.
“Losing that level of representation would be a significant setback,” a political observer noted, emphasizing that committee chairmanships, particularly in defence, often translate into stronger bargaining power for constituency projects and federal interventions.
Beyond his committee role, Daniel’s status as a ranking senator and former governor is seen as a key asset. His experience in both executive and legislative arms of government, analysts say, enhances his ability to navigate complex national issues while advocating effectively for Ogun East.
Observers also point to the potential economic implications, noting that Nigeria’s maritime sector remains a major revenue driver, with ongoing efforts to curb oil theft and piracy in the Gulf of Guinea As chairman of the Navy Committee, Daniel is directly involved in legislative oversight tied to these national priorities.
While no official statement has been issued indicating direct political confrontation, stakeholders insist that any attempt perceived or real to diminish the senator’s standing could weaken Ogun East’s voice in national affairs.

“As the political landscape evolves, the focus should be on preserving influence where it matters most,” another stakeholder added. “Ogun East cannot afford to lose its strongest footing in Abuja at this time.”
