The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has addressed widespread social media speculation suggesting he deliberately avoided greeting the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, at a recent public event in Ibadan, Oyo State. The monarch firmly denied any intentional slight, explaining the incident resulted from circumstantial factors rather than royal discourtesy.
Speaking with journalists in Ibadan yesterday, Oba Ladoja characterized the situation as a misunderstanding amplified beyond reason, noting that protocol and timing shaped his movements during the gathering. He arrived somewhat late and sought to reach his designated seat discreetly to avoid disrupting the ongoing proceedings.
“There was absolutely no intention behind what people are suggesting. This has been misread, particularly on social media platforms,” the Olubadan explained. “When arriving late somewhere, I aim to minimize disruption. Just as one waits for the appropriate moment to join a prayer line at the mosque, I was simply navigating to my seat before movement became restricted.”
The traditional ruler noted his seat was positioned between the Soun and the Alaafin, requiring him to pass several attendees. “I made no conscious choice to bypass anyone. What reason would I have?” he questioned. “The complete video footage shows me exchanging greetings with various dignitaries, including the governor. Social media, however, tends to strip context from situations.”
Regarding whether he had addressed any concerns stemming from the incident, Oba Ladoja maintained that no offense was given or taken. “I don’t believe anyone acted offensively, nor do I consider this matter insulting to anybody,” he stated.
The monarch concluded by emphasizing his commitment to fostering unity and advancement across generations, stressing the importance of educational standards and societal progress for Yorubaland.
