Supreme Court Orders Final Forfeiture of Emefiele’s Assets to Federal Government

Supreme Court Orders Final Forfeiture of Emefiele’s Assets to Federal Government

President Bola Tinubu has signed the Presidential Executive Order on Virtual Assets Coordination, 2026, establishing a unified framework to regulate virtual assets and strengthen Nigeria's digital economy. The President signed the order pursuant to Section 5 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), and it took effect immediately, according to a statement issued Friday by presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga. The statement explained that the order was designed to address a fragmented regulatory landscape, where overlapping and disjointed oversight by government agencies had exposed Nigerians to risks such as money laundering, terrorism financing, cybersecurity threats, fraud and revenue losses. It noted that unregistered operators had exploited these gaps in the past to defraud unsuspecting citizens. To close these loopholes, the order establishes a Virtual Asset Council chaired by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), with the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) serving as vice-chairs. Other members include the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA). The Council will set policy direction, foster cooperation among the agencies, and collaborate with the Attorney-General of the Federation to build a harmonised legal and institutional framework for the sector. A Virtual Asset Office will also be created as the Council's operational arm, with its secretariat based at the CBN. The office will coordinate information sharing, applications and reporting among agencies through an integrated supervisory technology platform. The statement clarified that the order does not create a new regulator or strip any agency of its existing powers. Instead, registration of virtual asset activities will be determined by the nature of the asset involved — the SEC will register security-related activities, while the CBN will handle payment, settlement, custody and other non-security virtual asset services. The Council will resolve any disputes over jurisdiction. As part of the coordinated approach, the CBN is proceeding with a regulatory sandbox that will allow eligible operators to test virtual asset products and blockchain-based solutions under close supervision before they reach the wider market. The NRS is also expected to release a tax policy for the virtual assets sector to strengthen compliance and ensure the industry contributes fairly to national revenue. Additionally, the Federal Government is finalising a Virtual Assets White Paper that will outline the country's long-term policy direction for the sector. The Council has been given 30 days to develop a Harmonised Implementation Framework to guide agencies in enforcing the order.

The organisers of the prestigious Megastar Man of the Decade Awards have officially opened nominations for the 2025 edition, calling on the public to submit names of esteemed personalities who have made significant impacts in their respective industries across Africa.

The highly anticipated awards ceremony, which has become a cornerstone event celebrating African excellence, is set to honour outstanding individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, innovation, and contribution to societal development.

Speaking on the upcoming edition, event organiser Adeniyi Ifetayo expressed enthusiasm about building on the momentum of the successful 2024 ceremony. “This year’s event will build on the frenzy of the 2024 edition and will deliver a stellar show while celebrating some of Africa’s best minds across the board,” Ifetayo stated.

He emphasised that the 2025 awards will maintain the high standards that have made the ceremony a respected platform for recognising African achievement and excellence.

The 2025 edition will spotlight personalities from four critical sectors that drive Africa’s economic and social development. The nominated categories will recognise leaders who have transformed Africa’s maritime sector and contributed to economic growth through shipping, ports, and marine services, while also celebrating innovators and executives who have made significant contributions to Africa’s energy sector through oil and gas initiatives. The awards will honour athletes, coaches, and sports administrators who have elevated African sports on the global stage, alongside acknowledging political leaders and business moguls who have driven positive change and economic development through governance and business excellence.

“These four industries represent the backbone of Africa’s development journey,” Ifetayo noted. “By celebrating excellence in these sectors, we aim to inspire the next generation of leaders and innovators across the continent.”

While maintaining the element of anticipation, Ifetayo assured that comprehensive information about the event venue, format, and full program details will be revealed in the coming weeks. “More information about the event will be revealed and the date will be announced soon,” he confirmed.

The organisers are encouraging nominations from across the African continent, seeking individuals whose work has transcended geographical boundaries and created a lasting impact in their respective fields.

The 2024 edition of the Megastar Man of the Decade Awards set a high benchmark for celebrating African excellence. The ceremony, held on December 1, 2024, at the prestigious Wells Carlton Hotel and Apartments in Abuja, featured a star-studded gathering of Nigeria’s most influential figures and thought leaders.

The event included a high-level panel discussion themed “Social Enterprise: A Catalyst for Development in Nigeria,” which brought together distinguished personalities, including Senator Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole, representing Edo North, Senator Prince Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North, and Chief Dele Momodu, veteran journalist and publisher of Ovation Magazine.

The 2024 ceremony also celebrated the Nasarawa State Governor among other notable personalities, establishing the awards as a significant platform for recognising leadership across various sectors of African society.

The success of the 2024 edition, with its blend of recognition ceremony and intellectual discourse, has positioned the Megastar Man of the Decade Awards as a momentous event in Nigeria’s awards history and a beacon for celebrating African achievement.

As nominations open for the 2025 edition, the organisers anticipate another exceptional gathering that will continue to spotlight and celebrate the remarkable contributions of Africa’s most influential personalities across maritime, oil and gas, sports, governance, and business sectors.
