The Oyo State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a work-free day to mark the new Islamic calendar year, Hijrah 1448AH.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, who said the government recognises the importance of Hijrah in the lives of Muslims in the state.
According to Oyelade, Hijrah commemorates the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622AD, an event he described as significant in Islamic history.
“As a gesture of respect and solidarity with the Muslim community, we have declared tomorrow, Tuesday, 16th June, 2026, a work-free day in the state,” he said.
The commissioner urged residents to use the occasion to pray for peace, unity and prosperity in Oyo State and Nigeria, while reflecting on the teachings of Hijrah and embracing solidarity and brotherhood.
“The Hijrah is a time for reflection, prayer, and community spirit. Let us come together on this day to pray for peace, unity, and prosperity in our state and our nation,” Oyelade added.
