Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing deepening internal crises and alleged interference by agents of the Nigerian state.
Obi made his decision public in a statement shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday.
The former Anambra State governor alleged that similar forces he believes destabilised the Labour Party and led to his earlier exit are now creating unrest within the ADC. He said the party is increasingly plagued by internal disputes, prolonged legal battles, mistrust, and division, rather than focusing on national development and service delivery.
According to him, the current atmosphere within the party has made it difficult to pursue meaningful political engagement.
“The same Nigerian state and its agents that created unnecessary crises and hostility within the Labour Party that forced me to leave now appear to be finding their way into the ADC,” he stated.
Obi clarified that his resignation was not driven by any personal disagreement with the party’s leadership, including National Chairman David Mark and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, both of whom he said he still respects.
He reiterated that his political ambition has always been rooted in service, compassion, and nation-building, not personal gain.
“I am not desperate to be President, Vice President, or Senate President. I am desperate to see a society where people can live safely and with dignity,” he added.
Obi also raised concerns about worsening insecurity, rising poverty, and the growing hardship across the country, noting that many Nigerians now live in fear and uncertainty.
He described the political environment as increasingly toxic, marked by intimidation, systemic pressure, and widespread discouragement, adding that many public figures quietly endure emotional and personal challenges while striving to serve.
Despite stepping down from the ADC, Obi expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, stating that the country still has the potential to achieve responsible and compassionate leadership built on justice and equal opportunity.
