NDC presidential candidate and former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has explained why he abolished the Office of the First Lady during his tenure as governor.
Obi said the decision was based on his belief that public funds should not be used to maintain an office that was not created through an electoral mandate.
The former governor made the disclosure during an interview with Advocacy for Good Governance, where he discussed his approach to managing government resources while in office.
According to Obi, he told his wife that she had not been elected by the people and, therefore, should not operate as though she held a formal government position.
He explained that he preferred for her to remain at home while he concentrated on fulfilling the responsibilities for which he was elected.
Obi said the decision reflected his broader philosophy of directing government resources towards areas that have a direct impact on citizens, particularly education and healthcare.
“I shut down (the) office of the first lady; I said it should not exist. Because nobody voted for you, you’re just my wife, and I love you. So you stay at home with me,” Obi said.
