A socio-political youth group, Omenuko Ndigbo United, has blasted Peter Obi for a perceived lack of commitment to the current opposition realignment efforts ahead of the 2027 general election.
The group slammed Obi for his “political aloofness” amid ongoing consultations aimed at forming a united opposition front to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking via a press statement, its president, Comrade Benjamin Madu, revealed that rather than unite with the coalition to rescue Nigeria from bad leadership, Peter Obi has decided to be selfish by focusing on himself.
Warning against a repeat of the political fragmentation seen during the 2023 elections, Madu stated that Obi must step up if he does not want to set back the South-East’s long-standing quest for the presidency.
“We are not happy with Peter Obi. Instead of joining hands with others to rescue Nigeria, he seems to be focused only on himself. This is not the time for selfish politics,” he said.
Omenuko Ndigbo United emphasised that Obi’s distance from opposition unity talks raises doubts about his political intentions, and it will soon lead to Nigerians accusing him of helping APC deliberately ahead of the forthcoming elections.
He urged Peter Obi to make his political intentions known once and for all, stressing that if the Labour Party politician pulls out of the coalition, it will be hard for the Igbo region to succeed in 2027.
Madu concluded by saying that Nigerians deserve honesty and clarity from Obi, so he must stop disguising and let the people know where he stands.
“This is the best time for Ndigbo to push for the presidency. But we need unity. If Obi pulls out of the coalition, it will be more difficult for an Igbo candidate to succeed in 2027 or even 2031.
Nigerians deserve honesty. Peter Obi should stop pretending and tell us where he stands. We will not allow what happened in 2023 to happen again, especially if it will hurt the Igbo cause,” he added.
