Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has sparked controversy by claiming that some activists who fought for democracy during General Sani Abacha’s military regime are now worse than the late dictator himself.
In a post on his 𝕏 account on Thursday, Obi argued that yesterday’s defenders of democracy have become today’s destroyers, without naming anyone specifically.
He wrote:
“Yesterday defenders of democracy, today’s destroyers. What a shame. What an irony of history, that those who claimed to champion democracy and human rights during Abacha’s era now appear worse than the man they opposed. Power indeed reveals character. A New Nigeria is POssible.”
Obi suggested that Abacha, long remembered as a face of oppression, could now be seen as more democratic and respectful of human rights than some former NADECO activists.
For context, NADECO (National Democratic Coalition) was formed on May 15, 1994, to fight against military rule in Nigeria and demand the recognition of M.K.O. Abiola as the winner of the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election.
