The Nigeria Police Force has arrested a man allegedly connected to the creation and circulation of a viral artificial intelligence-generated audio recording that falsely mimicked the voice of President Bola Tinubu.
The controversial audio message, which spread rapidly across social media platforms and messaging applications, generated widespread reactions among Nigerians after many listeners initially believed it was an authentic statement from the President. Investigations later revealed that the recording was likely produced using advanced AI voice-cloning technology.
According to police authorities, the suspect was apprehended following an extensive digital investigation carried out by security agencies. The operation was reportedly launched after concerns emerged over the potential threat posed by the fake audio to national security, public trust, and the integrity of official government communications.
Sources familiar with the investigation disclosed that law enforcement agencies tracked the origin and distribution channels of the recording before identifying the individual believed to have played a key role in its production and dissemination.
Police officials stated that the suspect is currently being questioned and may face charges related to cybercrime, misinformation, identity impersonation, and the unlawful use of digital technology to deceive the public.
