The management of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja has announced the indefinite closure of the facility following a reported security threat identified by the Nigeria Police Force.
According to the stadium management, the decision was taken after the Police Headquarters alerted authorities to a credible security concern affecting the stadium and its surroundings. The closure is aimed at protecting lives and ensuring public safety while security agencies assess the situation.
The restriction took effect on the night of Monday, August 3, 2026, with all entrances to the stadium shut and access suspended until further notice from the Police Headquarters.
As part of the emergency measures, everyone within the stadium premises was instructed to leave immediately in an orderly manner. Security personnel have also been deployed to enforce the closure and prevent unauthorized access to the facility.
The management advised athletes, sports enthusiasts, event organizers, and members of the public who intended to use the stadium to stay away from the premises and strictly comply with directives issued by law enforcement agencies.
Officials further assured the public that updates regarding the reopening of the stadium would be communicated once fresh directives are received from the Nigeria Police Force.
In an official notice issued by the stadium management, the authorities stated that the Police Headquarters had provided reliable intelligence indicating a credible security threat around the facility.
The statement read in part: “This is to inform all individuals currently using or planning to access the Abuja Stadium pitch that the Police Headquarters has reliably notified us of a credible security threat affecting the facility.
“Effective immediately, all entrances to the stadium are closed and will remain shut until further directive from the Police Headquarters.
“No entry will be permitted once the closure takes effect. All persons currently inside the premises are advised to vacate the stadium promptly and peacefully. Security personnel have been deployed to enforce this measure and ensure public safety.
“We urge everyone to remain calm, comply with all instructions from law enforcement officers, and avoid loitering around the stadium gates. Further updates will be communicated as soon as they are received from the Police Headquarters.”
The Moshood Abiola National Stadium is one of Nigeria’s foremost sporting facilities, hosting football matches, athletics competitions, training sessions, and several national events. The indefinite closure is expected to temporarily disrupt scheduled sporting and recreational activities until security authorities declare the area safe for public use.
