The Ogun State Police Command has uncovered a suspected baby factory in Mowe, Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area, rescuing two pregnant women and four children during the operation.
Six suspects were arrested in connection with the alleged human trafficking and illegal adoption activities uncovered at the facility.
The operation was carried out around 8 a.m. on Monday, August 24, following intelligence received by the police concerning suspicious activities at a building on Toluwalase Street, Abaren Village, through Gbarinmole.
According to the police, the four children rescued comprised two boys and two girls, while the two women were heavily pregnant at the time of the raid.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued in Abeokuta by the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Oluborode Opeyemi.
The command said its investigation also led detectives to a hospital within the Mowe area, where another disturbing incident was uncovered.
A woman reportedly gave birth to a baby boy at the hospital on August 20. However, the newborn allegedly went missing while the mother was still receiving treatment.
The police subsequently arrested the nurse who attended to the woman, as detectives intensified efforts to determine what happened to the baby and trace the child’s whereabouts.
Preliminary investigations, according to the command, indicated that the suspected facility may have been used for human trafficking and illegal adoption for some time.
The six arrested suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation.
The police said detectives would work to uncover the full extent of the alleged operation, locate the missing newborn and determine the individual roles of those arrested.
Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, assured residents that the command would continue its crackdown on human trafficking, child trading and other serious crimes.
He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to the police.
Ojajuni also pledged that the command would continue to deploy intelligence-led policing and swift intervention to protect vulnerable persons, particularly women and children.
