On Wednesday, Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, met with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, United Kingdom. The meeting, initiated at the request of the British monarch, marks the first time the two leaders have convened since their encounter at the COP 28 Climate Summit in Dubai in 2023.
A statement from the State House on Thursday revealed that President Tinubu and King Charles focused their discussions on global and regional matters of shared interest, particularly the urgent and complex challenge of climate change. President Tinubu reiterated Nigeria’s strong commitment to combating climate change while ensuring that the country’s energy security goals remain intact. He also emphasized Nigeria’s willingness to adopt global sustainability strategies.
The statement highlighted, “President Bola Tinubu was warmly received on Wednesday in London by His Majesty King Charles III at Buckingham Palace for a private meeting, underscoring the long-standing and valued relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.”
During their talks, the leaders explored opportunities for collaboration ahead of upcoming international events, including the COP 29 Summit in Azerbaijan and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa.
The discussion also touched on innovative approaches to climate financing and funding. Both leaders expressed a shared interest in strengthening partnerships by leveraging Nigeria’s leadership role in Africa and the Commonwealth.
