New information has surfaced regarding how suspected coup plotters reportedly penetrated Nigeria’s Presidential Villa in Abuja, carried out reconnaissance operations, and allegedly recruited employees of a major construction company before authorities disrupted the plan.
According to security and military sources who spoke with The PUNCH, several suspects including active-duty military officers allegedly accessed restricted sections of the Presidential complex, examined security infrastructure, and mapped out weak points in the facility’s defenses.
“Military officers involved in the alleged coup attempt actually gained entry to the Villa. They assessed the security installations and identified potential vulnerabilities,” a Presidential Villa security official revealed.
Authorities are examining the potential involvement of Julius Berger, the construction company contracted to maintain the Presidential Villa, amid claims that certain employees may have been recruited to facilitate unauthorized access to secure locations.
The Presidential Villa at Aso Rock ranks among Nigeria’s most heavily fortified locations, protected by specialized military personnel, intelligence officers, and private security contractors. Despite these measures, intelligence briefings in October 2025 highlighted suspicious activity near the compound, leading security services to intensify surveillance.
Sources indicate that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been briefed on the investigation’s findings but will allow the military justice system to proceed independently. “The President has demonstrated complete trust in the military’s ability to administer justice in accordance with established law,” an official confirmed.
Security agencies are now reassessing access procedures and clearance protocols, with particular attention to contractors and personnel authorized to enter sensitive zones.
The Defence Headquarters announced that military members found culpable following investigations into alleged misconduct including accusations of conspiring to overthrow the government will face military judicial proceedings.
Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, stated Monday that a thorough investigation has concluded, implicating several officers who must answer to the allegations.
“The investigation revealed that certain officers face accusations of plotting to topple the government, which contradicts the ethical standards, values, and professional conduct expected from members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” Uba explained.
