Russia is keeping a close watch on developments in Nigeria after reports emerged of potential United States military intervention, the country’s Foreign Ministry announced on Friday.
Speaking at a press briefing in Moscow, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova addressed questions about the situation in the West African nation and emphasised the importance of respecting international law.
“We are closely monitoring this issue and call on all parties involved to strictly comply with international legal norms,” Zakharova stated, urging Washington to follow established protocols.
The comments come in response to US President Donald Trump’s declaration on November 1, when he announced ordering the Pentagon to prepare options for potential military operations against terrorist organisations in Nigeria. Trump cited the protection of Christian communities in the country as the primary justification for the proposed action.
When questioned by Anadolu Agency about Kazakhstan’s recent decision to join the Abraham Accords, Zakharova declined to offer substantial commentary, saying Moscow does not currently see the need to address the matter.
Kazakhstan officially confirmed its participation in the accords on Friday, one day after President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev revealed the decision during a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which took place in President Trump’s presence.
Zakharova also voiced “grave concern” regarding increasing reports of Israeli ceasefire violations along Lebanon’s border.
Russia maintains ongoing communication with both Israeli and Lebanese authorities, stressing the critical importance of preventing actions that could reignite hostilities, she explained.
“We convey to all parties involved our firm stance on the need to avoid actions that may trigger an escalation of violence and another round of armed conflict,” the spokeswoman emphasised.
She affirmed that Russia would continue working collaboratively with regional and international partners to maintain stability in Lebanon and throughout the wider Middle East region.
