Seun Kuti, the youngest son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, has spoken out for the first time since his release from police custody, saying” I be orphan o, but family deeeey”.
The singer was granted bail on Tuesday after being arrested at the State Criminal, Investigations and Intelligence Department, SCIID, Yaba, Lagos on the orders of a Yaba Chief Magistrate Court for assaulting a police officer.
Seun, who was .nominated in the afrobeat of the Grammy, thanked his family, lawyers, and everyone who showed him love during his hard times on his official Instagram after his release.
His post reads: “I want to say a profound thanks to everyone who showed me all this love. All my friends that showed up. Thanks most especially to my beautiful wife, @chefyeidekuti
“Last but not least. The legal team. Uncle Femi Falana (SAN) Uncle Olumide Fisika (SAN) Uncle Kayode Adegoke (SAN) Barrister Ogunlana. Ade Ademiluyi. And everyone on the team. I owe you my freedom and my sanity. Let’s go.”
Apple’s Bite reports that Seun participated actively in the Occupy Nigeria protests against the fuel subsidy removal policy of President Goodluck Jonathan in his country Nigeria in January 2012. Seun Kuti is an atheist.
In 2019, on Jidenna’s 85 to Africa album Kuti voiced an outro of a song with the words:
“I believe it’s time for an African peoples powered highway. A highway that will connect the Diaspora and Motherland. A global highway for African people all over the world to rediscover themselves. To remember that the only thing that unites black people, globally, the only thing we all have in common is that we are from Africa”.
