Tinubu 2023: “BAT the Man to Beat” by Kunle Adeyemi
It is funny how people forget quickly the contributions and inputs in making Lagos state an envy of other states in Nigeria. Asiwaju single handedly turned the fortunes of Lagos state to what indigenes and non indigenes are enjoying today with no strings attached.
He ventured into politics after retiring from an active duty as an accountant in a multi national company, “Mobil”.
He contested and won the seat to represent Lagos West Senatorial District. The election process that produced the acclaimed winner of the 1993 “June 12” presidential election, Chief MKO Abiola. He contested under SDP Platform against the late, Chief (Mrs) Kemi Nelson, who contested under the NRC Platform.
The political process was truncated by the incursion by the ruling military junta, led by Gen. Babangida.
In enthroning democracy and the winner of the June ’12, 1993 presidential election, Chief MKO Abiola.
Asiwaju and some other members of the Afenifere were forced into exile. Several attempts were made on their lives because of their outspokenness against the junta.
While in exile, Asiwaju single handedly financed many members of the Afenifere of like minds and same vision for Nigeria.
With emergence of a new political structures and process, Asiwaju was considered to run under the then AD platform for the Gubanitorial election in Lagos State.
He swung to action after being sworn in as the Governor of Lagos state in 1999.
He brought in technocrats into his cabinet, the likes of Mr Dele Alake, Mr Wale Edun, including the current VP of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Oshinbajo etc.
His Government held the first Economic summit, this brought better working relationship between the government and the private sector.
Under his watch, Lagos State also played host to all South-South Governors in which a communique was issued on better working relationship amongst the Governors.
This feat has never been achieved by other previous administrations.
He survived the onslaught of the PDP “TSUNAMI” rallies and elections, that sent other AD Governors out of government house in 2003.
He is political Strategist and sound minded political God Father, knowing fully well that political 2 + 2 = strategy and not 4.
While others were sleeping, Asiwaju was busy working and strategizing on his political future, which gave birth to what we are experiencing politically in Nigeria.
To me “EMI LOKAN” and “E GBE KINI YI WA” Is a sentence with deep rooted meaning. He has indeed worked tirelessly for it.
Call him whatever name you want, write whatever you want about him, it does not change anything nor sink his person. Where in the world can you point a political angel, a politician without blemish, even countries we look up to. There’s no political saint anywhere, you can take that to the bank.
Give it to BAT, he has overpaid his dues, therefore deserves a shot at the presidency.
He deserves our support and vote at this critical time of our country.
