President Bola Tinubu has reportedly redeployed former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, to South Africa as part of efforts to strengthen diplomatic engagement and address growing concerns over attacks on Nigerians living in the country.

The move comes amid renewed reports of xenophobic violence and harassment targeting foreign nationals, including Nigerians, in parts of South Africa. The Federal Government is said to be intensifying diplomatic and community-level interventions aimed at protecting Nigerian citizens and improving bilateral relations between both countries.

Sources familiar with the development disclosed that Fani-Kayode’s assignment is expected to focus on consultations with South African authorities, Nigerian community leaders, and other stakeholders on ways to reduce tensions and promote peaceful coexistence.

The former minister, who has previously represented Nigeria in several diplomatic and political engagements, is also expected to engage with diaspora groups and provide feedback to the Federal Government on the welfare and security situation of Nigerians residing in South Africa.

Concerns over xenophobic attacks have remained a recurring issue in relations between Nigeria and South Africa over the years, with several incidents leading to protests, diplomatic reactions, and calls for stronger protection of African migrants.

The Nigerian government has repeatedly condemned attacks on its citizens abroad and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and dignity of Nigerians living in foreign countries.

Officials believe the latest diplomatic engagement could help ease tensions, encourage cooperation between both nations, and improve support systems for Nigerians in South Africa.
