President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed sadness over the death of elder statesman, businessman and former Governor of the old Gongola State, Alhaji Bamanga Muhammad Tukur, who died at the age of 90.
In a condolence message issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described Tukur’s death as the end of a significant chapter in Nigeria’s political and economic history.
The President said the late Tafidan Adamawa made important contributions to public administration, governance, business, politics and Africa’s economic development throughout his career.
Born on September 15, 1935, Tukur became nationally prominent after serving as General Manager of the Nigerian Ports Authority from 1975 to 1982. During his tenure, he was involved in efforts to modernise port operations and strengthen Nigeria’s maritime sector.
He later entered politics and was elected Governor of the old Gongola State in 1983. The former state was subsequently divided into present-day Adamawa and Taraba states.
After leaving public office, Tukur returned to the private sector, where he held leadership positions in BHI Holdings and the DADDO Group of Companies. His business interests covered areas including manufacturing, agriculture, logistics and trading.
He also served as Federal Minister of Industries under the military administration of General Sani Abacha between 1993 and 1995.
At the continental level, Tukur played a role in promoting African economic development. He served as Executive President of the African Business Roundtable and Chairman of the NEPAD Business Group, advocating increased intra-African trade, private-sector participation and sustainable development.
Tukur later became National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, serving from March 2012 until January 2014.
Tinubu described the late politician as an urbane and generous statesman who was committed to integrity and public service. He said Nigeria would miss his counsel and fatherly guidance.
The President extended his condolences to the Tukur family, the Fombina Emirate of Adamawa, the Adamawa State Government and people, as well as members of Nigeria’s political and business communities and their counterparts across Africa.
Tinubu also prayed for the repose of Tukur’s soul, asking Almighty Allah to forgive his shortcomings, grant him Aljannah Firdaus and comfort his family and other mourners.
