The United States has appointed veteran diplomat Brandon Hudspeth as the new Consul General at the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos.

The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria announced the appointment on its official X account, noting that Hudspeth is returning to Nigeria after previously serving as the Consulate’s Political-Economic Section Chief.

His appointment comes as the United States undergoes major changes to its consular operations in Nigeria, particularly the processing of routine visa applications.

Since August 1, routine U.S. visa services for applicants in Nigeria have been transferred from the U.S. Embassy in Abuja to the Lagos consulate. Lagos now serves as the designated centre for routine U.S. visa processing in the country.

“We’re excited to welcome Brandon Hudspeth as the new Consul General at U.S. Consulate General Lagos, returning to Nigeria after previously serving as the Consulate’s Political-Economic Section Chief,” the embassy stated.

Before taking up his new position, Hudspeth served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Namibia. He has also held diplomatic assignments in the Philippines, Mali, Cuba and Afghanistan, as well as positions at the U.S. Department of State’s Operations Centre and Bureau of African Affairs in Washington.

The U.S. Embassy said it looks forward to working with Hudspeth to further strengthen relations between the United States and Nigeria.

His appointment also comes amid a broader restructuring of U.S. visa operations across Africa. Under the new arrangement, routine visa processing is being concentrated in selected regional hubs to improve efficiency and strengthen screening and vetting procedures.

Lagos is one of 20 designated U.S. visa-processing hubs on the continent. Other centres include Abidjan, Accra, Addis Ababa, Cape Town, Dakar, Dar es Salaam, Djibouti, Johannesburg, Kampala, Kigali, Kinshasa, Lomé, Luanda, Malabo, Monrovia, Nairobi, Port Louis, Praia and Yaoundé.

Applicants from countries without designated processing hubs may have to travel to one of the approved centres to complete their visa applications.

The restructuring is expected to reduce the number of U.S. diplomatic missions in Africa providing routine visa services from almost 50 to 20. However, the affected missions will continue to provide services to American citizens, including emergency assistance and other diplomatic functions.

With the arrival of a new Consul General, the relocation of routine visa services to Lagos and plans for a new consulate campus, the city is expected to assume an increasingly important role in U.S. consular activities in Nigeria.

Hudspeth’s experience in political and economic affairs could also contribute to broader cooperation between the two countries in areas such as trade, investment, energy, security and development.

His return to Nigeria therefore comes at an important period in U.S.-Nigeria relations, as both countries adjust to changes in visa and migration policies while pursuing wider economic and strategic interests.

As Consul General, Hudspeth is expected to strengthen U.S. engagement with Lagos and deepen collaboration with Nigerian government institutions, businesses, civil society groups and other stakeholders.

With Lagos now at the centre of routine U.S. visa processing in Nigeria, his tenure is expected to be closely associated with the implementation of the new consular structure and its impact on Nigerians seeking to travel to the United States.
