The United States Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos have released the list of public holidays that will affect their operations for the rest of 2026, announcing that routine public services will be suspended on eight occasions between August and December.
According to the schedule published by the US diplomatic missions, regular consular services, including visa processing, passport applications, and notarial services, will not be available on the listed dates due to the observance of both Nigerian and American public holidays.
The first closure will take place on Tuesday, August 25, in observance of Eid-El-Maulud, which marks the birth of Prophet Muhammad and is recognised as a public holiday in Nigeria.
The embassy and consulate will also be closed on Monday, September 7, to commemorate Labour Day in the United States. Operations will again be suspended on Thursday, October 1, as Nigeria celebrates its Independence Day.
Another closure is scheduled for Monday, October 12, in observance of Columbus Day in the United States.
In November, the diplomatic missions will not provide routine public services on Wednesday, November 11, for Veterans Day, and on Thursday, November 26, to observe Thanksgiving Day.
The final holiday closures for the year will occur on Friday, December 25, for Christmas Day, which is observed in both Nigeria and the United States, and on Saturday, December 26, for Boxing Day, a public holiday in Nigeria.
The US missions advised visa applicants and individuals seeking passports, notarial services, and other consular assistance to plan their appointments around the holiday schedule to avoid disruptions.
While routine public services will be unavailable on the listed dates, the embassy assured that emergency assistance for American citizens will remain available throughout the holiday periods.
